Discover this place where, while crossing the Number 4 bridge, you feel all your cares wash away. Decompress as it takes your breath and then makes you exhale. By your third day on Cedar Key, you actually get away. You are so "away," that you forget to charge your cell phone, you leave your watch on the nightstand, forget your wallet, discover that the best mode of transportation is a golf cart and leave your keys.... somewhere. You enjoy too much seafood, not enough sunsets and start daydreaming of how you will make a permanent escape to this secret place.
Are your dates booked at Blue Chair? Don't miss out on a Cedar Key vacation! Please see our other cute cottage, Calypso! It is VRBO #1406506.
Your amazing Blue Chair Key vacation experience all begins when you tie up at the spacious floating dock. No boat? Enjoy fishing for Reds, Black Drums, Croakers, Catfish, Trout and viewing dolphins right from the dock!
Just a golf cart ride from downtown Cedar Key and Dock Street, you will find Blue Chair a charming spot, perfect for a long weekend, or stay a week or even a month. It's perfect for two couples or a romantic cottage for an anniversary getaway. It's also ideal for a girls weekend!
The owners at Blue Chair Key have specially supplied this small cottage with some of their favorite furnishings and decor. They want our guests to feel as though they are visiting a friend's private cottage and not the typical rental, so they offer comfy furnishings, quality linens and a completely outfitted kitchen. They visit the cottage often. Their commitment to making their guests feel at home is unsurpassed and they hope you enjoy your time here as much as they do.
Blue chair is pet friendly! We welcome one dog under 25lbs. We also reserve the right to restrict this policy to certain breeds.
The protected bay waters at Blue Chair Key create a sheltered and safe harbor for your boat. Push off for a self-guided backwater tour in the provided kayaks. Kayaking at Blue Chair is AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Step off onto the dock and your Cedar Key "home away from home" is only steps away. It's an inviting respite after a day in the sun.
The spacious outdoor living space is complete with Blue Chair Adirondacks, dining al fresco seating for six, a fish cleaning station, bar stools and several umbrellas for your outdoor comfort. Your menu will start with some fresh Cedar Key oysters, clams and your own "catch of the day."
Blue Chair's kayaks are provided for your paddle adventure to nearby deserted National Wildlife Island, Atsena Otie, only a 20-30 minute paddle away, or a soothing backwater tour among the marshes. The Blue Chair golf cart is offered to you for your entire stay at a discounted rate. You'll want to explore the entire island via golf cart. This is especially handy for your trips downtown, making parking a great deal easier. Load your beach things on the cart and head off to the City Park beach for a day of sun and sand. Most of our guests rent the golf cart and never even move their car.
Blue Chair Key is a small cottage that comfortably offers two bedrooms, one bath and a large great room for dining and relaxing. The bedrooms are small but cozy. The recently refreshed bath has a tub and shower combination. Luxury bath towels and beach towels are supplied.
The master bedroom's luxury king-sized bed is especially comfy. There is a spacious closet for your vacation things, a ceiling fan for your comfort, and phone charger ports are installed at each nightstand. The owners know how important a restful sleep is on vacation, so they took special care to squeeze this large comfortable bed into the cozy space. The addition of high-quality pillows, linens, room-darkening shades and all-cotton bedding assure a great night's sleep.
The cozy second bedroom has a luxury queen-sized bed, and for your privacy, rolling barn-style doors. All cotton bedding, plush pillows and its own satellite TV make it a comfy guest suite.
Because our guests shared feedback about the "learning" Nest thermostat, we upgraded it to a Honeywell electronic thermostat.
When it's time for dinner, you will have trouble deciding between cooking up your own fresh catch or enjoying one of the many great restaurants on the island. The smells from those restaurants during your beach time made you hungry, so now you're starving. So what's for dinner? Pasta with shrimp scampi? Fish tacos? Blackened redfish?
Whatever the menu, you'll prepare it in a well stocked kitchen at Blue Chair. There is filtered drinking water at the sink. The appliances are new stainless steel and include a cafe-door refrigerator, a ceramic topped range and a dishwasher, allowing for an easy clean up. It's all there, plus much more, to make your cooking and dining in a pleasure. Both indoor and outdoor tableware are supplied. New cookware, utensils and a variety of glassware are all included.
The owners love their coffee, so they know how important great coffee can be. They provide both a drip coffee maker as well as a Nespresso machine. Bring your thimble-sized pods in your favorite flavors. If you are also a coffee aficionado, don't miss Cedar Key's only coffee shop, 1842 Daily Grind!
The dining room is framed by an over-sized port hole window overlooking the deck, the floating dock and the water. Dining here with family and friends is a memorable occasion.
Out on the deck, you'll find a great opportunity for a little commiseration over drinks during a glorious Cedar Key sunset. (It's a Florida island, so be sure to bring your no-see-um repellent if you like to stay outside after sunset! The no-see-ums do go to sleep around 9:30, though!)
Afterward, relax in the comfortable living room with its ceramic tile, rugs and overstuffed furniture. The satellite TV is Dish Network and there is Wi-Fi.
Blue Chair Key is designed with the vacationer in mind. Refined rustic furnishings, coastal decor and thoughtful lighting provide you with a comfortable experience. The living room is level with the deck and the two are joined by glass doors. The dining and living areas are all one great room with a vaulted ceiling topped by a spacious sky light flooding the entire area with sunlight.
While Blue Chair is not a stepless cottage, there are only three steps into the house. There are two steps from the dining and bedroom level to the living area.
Whether or not you bring your boat you'll still plan to fish. Fish for Red Fish or Black Drum from your own floating dock . Hang out on the dock for an occasional dolphin visit. Drop the crab trap into the water and haul out some dinner. Fish from the nearby bridge. Fish from the down town county pier. Hire an inshore or offshore local guide and create a memorable vacation experience.
While staying at Blue Chair Key cottage, you may want to spend some time in the local restaurants or bars. Brian's Big Deck restaurant offers outside seating on Dock Street and is pet friendly. 83 West is waterfront dining and you must give it a try. Away From The World and L&M are both waterfront. Away From the World offers outside dining and specializes in burgers. It just might have the best view on the island and is especially known for the daily mid-afternoon dolphin pod sightings. L & M is downstairs and is a full bar. Steamers is one of the most popular restaurants on Dock Street and has live entertainment on weekends. Duncan's on the Gulf is also over the water with entertainment and great food. Also on Dock Street are two gift shops for buying Cedar Key souvenirs. These are Dilly Dally Galley and Island Trading Post.
Don't miss Bonish on Second Street! One location is a great little bar and the other is a lovely gift shop. Tell them we sent you!
Also on Second Street, you will find 1842, a coffee and breakfast place, the Second Street Cafe, Tony's Seafood, and the Island Hotel Restaurant. Also downtown, you will find Cedar Key Pizza, Salt Marsh Cottage Gifts, Country Store gift shop and two art shops with local art. Don't miss the Cedar Key Market! If they don't have it, you don't really need it.
You'll have plenty to do during your stay at Blue Chair Key, whether kayaking, biking, boating, sunning, hiking, beaching or strolling the streets of our quaint town. Tour the clam and oyster facilities or even take a water tour with Bobby Witt on our only official Clam and Oyster Educational tour. Cedar Key has a lot to offer and we love to share our island with our guests at Blue Chair Key.
BOATER INFORMATION: Boat safely and responsibly. Boating from Blue Chair is AT YOUR OWN RISK. Cedar Key is a shallow water area until you reach the channels. You will find fantastic fishing, a dozen dolphin pods and lovely deserted beaches.
Experienced boaters should study navigational charts and tides.
We have two approaches for bay access from the dock. Keep in mind that the bay can be less than 2 feet deep at low tide. Talk to locals before going out. They are a terrific resource for navigating the Cedar Keys.
The first bay access involves a bridge to the east (shown in photos) that the State of Florida says is 6.5 feet high at mean high tide. In October, for example, we have five feet of water at low tide at the dock and a clearance of +/- 6 feet at the bridge at high tide. However, both vary greatly and you will need judge this height on your approach.
The second bay access approach is via a tidal waterway to the west, with a variety of depths, depending on the tide. CHECK AND KNOW YOUR HEIGHT TO THE WATERLINE, DRAFT, TIDES and USE YOUR DEPTH FINDER before navigating.
The City Dock and Boat Ramp charges $16 per launch or load. Cedar Key Marina II is a great resource for boaters and fishermen.
